Banking in San Salvador: Regulator, USD Accounts & Transfers

Banking in San Salvador is governed by El Salvador-wide rules: Banco Central de Reserva (BCR) with supervision by the Superintendencia del Sistema Financiero (SSF) oversees regulated providers, the United States dollar (legal tender since 2001, alongside bitcoin as legal tender under the 2021 Bitcoin Law) (USD) is the local currency, and domestic payments use a specific account format and rail. Here is what that means in practice, each point tied to its official source.

The regulator to check

In Latin America, regulation is national — the body to check for a San Salvador provider is El Salvador's.

Banco Central de Reserva (BCR) with supervision by the Superintendencia del Sistema Financiero (SSF)

Banks and non-bank financial intermediaries are authorised and supervised under the supervision of the Superintendencia del Sistema Financiero, and digital wallet providers operating under the Bitcoin Law framework (including the state Chivo wallet and private bitcoin service providers) must hold registration with the Central Reserve Bank's Bitcoin Office registration regime. Verify a provider's SSF authorisation or BCR bitcoin-service registration before you hold funds with it.

Currency & local account details

To receive or send money locally, San Salvador accounts use El Salvador's standard details.

Currency:
United States dollar (legal tender since 2001, alongside bitcoin as legal tender under the 2021 Bitcoin Law) (USD)
Local account format
El Salvador issues IBANs with the country code SV followed by 26 characters, a 28-character total; because the economy is dollarised there is no separate national currency account numbering beyond the bank's own account number embedded in the IBAN.

How domestic transfers move

Moving money within El Salvador runs on a defined payment system.

The Banco Central de Reserva settles high-value payments in its RTGS and runs the retail interbank clearing for low-value transfers, bitcoin and dollar transfers can move through wallets authorised under the Bitcoin Law framework (the state Chivo wallet was transferred to private operation in 2025-2026), and remittances from the United States flow through banks, wallets and bitcoin service providers rather than a national instant-payment switch.
